Problem Tech Solves

Tech Brief

Not only is heart disease the leading cause of death in the U.S., but it is where the biggest gap in health equity lies. Disparities in heart disease care lead to higher mortality rates in women and racial minorities. In addition, according to the American College of Cardiology, African American and Hispanic adults in the U.S. have higher rates of hypertension (a leading risk factor for heart disease) compared to Caucasian adults. Employers are seeking innovative solutions to move the needle on DEI initiatives given the gaps in cardiac care and how they affect health equity. The Hello Heart app is accessible to many underserved populations, and has also added gender-personalized clinical flows to close the gap on women’s heart care, knowing that heart disease symptoms in women can differ from those in men, and women are more likely to have heart attack symptoms unrelated to chest pain. Hello Heart’s solution is offered for free to end-users through their employers, allowing millions of members to access technology that can assist them in forming healthier habits, tracking blood pressure, and reminding them to take their medications. This helps keep individuals healthy, and can ultimately reduce the overall financial strain on the healthcare ecosystem.

Tech Differentiators

A key differentiator of Hello Heart is that it offers a personalized, digital-only coaching solution, empowering users to manage their blood pressure on their own terms – anytime, anywhere – a major driver for high engagement rates. Confident in its tailored offering, Hello Heart prides itself on its peer-reviewed data and studies. Publishing data in a peer-reviewed study is not something many companies in the digital therapeutics space feel comfortable or confident undertaking. Allowing clinicians and statisticians to dig through your dataset and challenge your methodology, while knowing the results may be published regardless of the findings, takes an incredibly high level of courage and confidence in your outcomes. The app has shown the highest engagement rate in the category, with sustained long-term app engagement. A study published in JAMA Network Open analyzed data from over 28,000 users to show whether engagement with a hypertension self-management program and blood pressure monitor connected to an app with digital coaching was associated with blood pressure control during a 3 year follow-up period. One year post-enrollment, reduced median systolic blood pressure was observed in over 85% of users who had Stage 2 hypertension at baseline. Greater engagement with the app was associated with lower systolic blood pressure over time.

Validation

The Validation Institute issued a report validating Hello Heart’s cost savings, demonstrating a reduction of total employer medical spend by an average of $1,865 per participant or 19% of total medical claims spending in the first year, largely the result of participants avoiding expensive and invasive procedures. More specifically, when it came to surgeries and inpatient savings, it found an average of savings of $516 per participant per year, $304 per participant per year in emergency room savings, and $878 per participant per year in imaging diagnostic savings. The study also found that Hello Heart program participants increased their visits to primary care providers, as the Hello Heart solution encourages use of preventative care. Not only is this far more cost-effective overall, but it supports better long-term health outcomes by utilizing more preventative care services.
