Problem Tech Solves

Mental and behavioral health issues have long been an overlooked area of healthcare. An estimated 44 million Americans are living with a mental illness, and 1 in 4 individuals who suffer from mental health issues report an unmet need of treatment. The effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic such as social isolation and economic downturns have only exacerbated the issue. In addition to the massive number of individuals who need treatment, mental health is also the single most expensive medical condition to treat in the U.S., even more so when presented in people with a chronic condition. Studies have shown that mental health disorders were associated with nearly $193 billion in lost earnings annually in the U.S. Innovative technologies connecting care providers and organizations to individuals can serve as the catalyst to driving collaborative, integrated, and holistic care that will help bridge the costly and important gap between mental and physical health. NeuroFlow seeks to address these issues by helping organizations provide better care for their patients as well as lowering the cost of care. The combination of NeuroFlow’s award-winning mobile application and a clinical facing dashboard - along with response services - creates a new path forward for better behavioral health care; one that curbs costs for healthcare systems and improves outcomes for the patients they aim to serve.

Tech Brief

NeuroFlow has built a HIPAA-compliant, cloud-based platform that facilitates behavioral health access and engagement in all care settings to improve outcomes, overall wellness, and cost of care. By integrating an interactive digital application focused on overall wellness with primary healthcare, NeuroFlow is able to redefine mental and behavioral health treatment. NeuroFlow’s platform combines a patient facing application and a provider facing care coordination dashboard which communicate with each other, creating a digital feedback loop where providers can create and adjust treatment plans as needed in real time based on patient activity and progress. NeuroFlow’s award winning mobile application offers education, training, and exercises in mindfulness, CBT, and similar psychosocial and behavior change skill sets. The app also uses behavioral economics to incentivize engagement and offers gamification as well as a rewards system that allows users to redeem prizes for working on their overall health. Patient generated data and progress is then fed back into the provider dashboard to track progress in between appointments and adjust treatment plans. Additionally, the native dashboard also serves as a registry for psychiatric collaborative care (CoCM) and consultations while providing real-time risk stratification of a patient population. Consequently, NeuroFlow delivers actionable population health insights which help inform the allocation of resources and evaluation of behavioral health initiatives. Combining validated techniques, data science, and behavioral economics, NeuroFlow moves beyond paper based assessments and outdated portals, giving all stakeholders in the healthcare system a better approach to behavioral health.

Tech Differentiators

NeuroFlow stands alone from other behavioral health offerings by strategically combining high engagement, clinical measurement, and ongoing management, all central pillars and key aspects of sustainable mental and behavioral healthcare, into one solution. The patient-facing application engages users with personalized education, training, and exercises in mindfulness, all designed to treat and alleviate their unique symptoms and conditions. Among these activities are clinical grade mental health assessments such as the GAD7 and PHQ9, which allows for objective measurement of the patients’ mental health. Integrated into clinical workflows and leading EMR systems, NeuroFlow gives care teams the data they need to provide integrated, collaborative care. Based on the information collected and reported out, they are able to adjust their treatment plan accordingly. NeuroFlow also contains custom triggers for worsening symptoms and will also notify the health provider for immediate intervention. This way, the health providers are able to be much more agile and responsive to their patients’ conditions and are able to deliver more efficient care. By providing all of these functionalities and resources, NeuroFlow is able to create a digital feedback loop where the quality of care is improved and costs are reduced. Each of the pillars are important in providing better care, but when implemented together, creates the most comprehensive solution for integrated behavioral health.

Validation

In order to respond to the growing demand for behavioral health services, Jefferson Health partnered with NeuroFlow in hopes of reducing administrative burden and costs while increasing the reach and impact of their care teams. With streamlined workflows and EHR integrations into Jefferson’s existing systems, NeuroFlow was easily deployed to dozens of clinics across the health system in a matter of months. The solution engages patients with activities and exercises that are custom tailored to each individual, designed to alleviate and manage their symptoms. In addition, Jefferson providers now get a detailed and comprehensive overview of a patient’s progress and mental health. If a patient’s score places them at high-risk, NeuroFlow can immediately alert healthcare professionals and allow them to reach out to their patients in a timely manner. “Without this application, several weeks could pass before I even knew my patient wasn’t feeling well. This provides immediate, valuable information,” said OB/GYN Dr. Jennifer Hummel, DO, at Jefferson Health in New Jersey. This new approach to behavioral health integration has enabled Jefferson to simultaneously improve patient outcomes while reducing costs. Some of the great results achieved by Jefferson Health include: 82% of patients reported improvement in anxiety or depression symptoms 34% ED reduction 19% increase in screening Read more about the work here: How Jefferson Health Reduced ED Utilization by 34% with Digital Behavioral Health Integration - https://f.hubspotusercontent20.net/hubfs/5158979/External-%20Jefferson_Health_NeuroFlow_Case_Study.pdf
