The leading digital mental health provider for university students

Tech Brief

A clinically-informed mental health provider, Mantra puts quality into every aspect of its business. From building a patient-first platform, which prioritizes the needs of the student, to working as a partner clinic to existing college counseling centers, Mantra is changing the way care is accessed and delivered on college campuses. The company’s Collaboration Portal, which is an extension to its proprietary EHR, allows Mantra providers to collaborate clinically with on-campus clinics. This is a unique innovation in the world of digital health, bridging the gap between in-person and virtual care. Knowing that each institution, campus, and student body is unique, Mantra meets partners where they are, ensuring that each program is built to the needs of the college or university. The company offers multiple referral pathways which increases the entry ways to care, ensuring that no student falls through the cracks. This, in addition to the company’s on-demand reporting system, makes it easy for college counseling centers to monitor the quality of care provided. Mantra also maintains its own in-house network of providers, all of whom have been trained in cultural humility and have worked closely with the young adult population. Using evidence-based practices and following the highest national standards of care, the team of providers are fully prepared to meet the needs of diverse student populations and those with high acuity needs.

Problem Tech Solves

Many college students across the country have reported an elevated level of depression, loneliness, and hopelessness that predates the pandemic. Colleges nationwide have been grappling with a shortage of mental health providers. Mantra helps schools meet the increased demand for behavioral health assistance by teaming up with on-campus counselors to make referrals to Mantra-affiliated, board-certified psychiatric specialists. Mantra also collaborates with college counselors on evidence-based treatment plans and tracks patient progress over time. Mantra's closed-loop digital care program blends telehealth technology with patient support services and provides continuity of care so students’ treatment isn’t interrupted during school breaks. Mantra takes a collaborative approach to care. Working closely with counselors, Mantra is able to connect a student to a provider within a week and match them with a provider that meets their preferences. In addition, Mantra enables real-time communication and shared medical decision-making through its collaboration portal, ensuring a student’s care is managed and monitored on a regular basis. There’s been a historical lack of diversity in the behavioral health industry, which has challenged schools to achieve a more equitable approach to mental health services. To ensure students remain engaged in treatment, Mantra offers culturally competent care for students with diverse identities (LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, etc) and maintains a qualified group of providers who have shared identities and experiences.

Validation

The Mantra program serves over 500,000 students across 50+ campuses of all sizes nationwide. In addition to using clinical scores to evaluate the mental health improvements of patients, Mantra conducts quarterly patient NPS surveys to better understand patient satisfaction and outcomes. In the most recent survey, Mantra discovered that 68% of patients report that they are performing better in school due to Mantra’s telehealth services and 70% report that Mantra services have helped them stay in school. Overall, 81% of students have reported that Mantra makes it easy to take care of their mental health, and 68% stated that they perform better in their schoolwork due to the virtual therapy and psychiatry services offered by Mantra. In addition, 78% of students reported that their therapist is supportive, helpful, understanding, and “amazing.” Mantra also tracks time to care, as well as initial intake and return rate. An internal clinical outcomes study for the 2020-2021 school year showed that 91% of students referred to Mantra from a campus clinician made it to their first appointment. This data point far surpassed the status quo of just over 40% of students making it to their first appointment when referred to a community provider by a campus-based provider. On average, Mantra’s partner schools have seen 78% and 84% of students under psychiatric care experiencing improved depression and anxiety symptoms. As a result of these positive student outcomes, 100% of Mantra’s partner schools renewed and/or expanded their partnerships.
