Problem Tech Solves

Tech Brief

With an ever-worsening opioid epidemic, we need to address this public health crisis now. Despite there being nearly 10 million Americans struggling with addiction, only 10% are diagnosed or in treatment. If the pandemic has proven anything, it’s that virtual care can help address some of these very issues, and it’s time to extend these offerings to patients with substance use disorders. There are many reasons why Americans aren't able to access the addiction treatment they need to manage their OUD. In the US today, 40% of rural Americans live in a county without a single provider that offers MAT. And, traditional treatment options are prohibitively expensive and time consuming–with in-person rehabilitation stays costing upwards of $15,000 for a one-month stay and requiring long stints away from work and family. Not to mention, the societal stigma around addiction precludes many from seeking traditional treatment options out of fear of discrimination and isolation. Bicycle Health is filling this gap in care to combat the opioid crisis head-on. Its virtual care platform addresses accessibility, cost and stigma barriers that otherwise hinder people from seeking treatment. Bicycle Health’s telemedicine platform has been able to rapidly scale this solution to serve patients across 26 states–and it has plans to help more. Additionally, Bicycle Health has forged relationships with some of the most prominent healthcare payors (Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicaid/Medicare, United Healthcare, Molina Healthcare, Anthem, Aetna) to ensure its treatment is affordable. With Bicycle Health, OUD treatment is stigma-free, confidential and secure.

Tech Differentiators

Bicycle Health is setting the precedent for what all telehealth companies–not just virtual OUD providers–should look like. Bicycle Health is the first and only company in the tele-OUD space to publish a peer-reviewed study that details and proves the efficacy of its telehealth model. This is an effort to bring more transparency to healthcare by publicly detailing its model so others in the space can test it, challenge it, and iterate on it–enabling continuous improvement of telehealth models across the board. Additionally, Bicycle Health has the largest medical group dedicated to Addiction Medicine in the country. With a comprehensive medical staff who treat patients and a research team that’s constantly developing and quantitatively evaluating its methods of tele-OUD care delivery, the company is developing patient-centered efforts that exemplify and innovate evidence-based telehealth policies and practices. Bicycle Health also recently assembled a renowned advisory board with leaders across multiple facets of addiction treatment and healthcare. Importantly, Bicycle Health is patient-centered. In addition to caring for patients holistically by providing medication management, behavioral health treatment, support groups, and care coordination, Bicycle Health is the first and only virtual provider to have a Patient Advisory Council where patients are co-creating the care model with clinicians to create an environment in which all voices are valued and incorporated into improvement efforts. Bicycle Health has the largest and most accessed collection of educational content about Suboxone, a life-saving medication used to treat OUD, to educate those with OUD and others in the Addiction Medicine space.

Validation

This past spring, Bicycle Health published a peer-reviewed study in leading medical trade journal, BMJ Innovations, that shows retention rates that are appreciably higher and no-show rates that are significantly lower than in-person averages. It demonstrates 86% of insured patients still in treatment at 30 days and 75% for a mixed population of insured and self-pay at 30 days. The model also leads to lower no-show rates for doctor’s visits, as evidenced by 9.5% of patients in the study missing an appointment compared to the 23% average of in-person treatment. This study corroborates both the efficacy MAT as a viable form of treatment, and telehealth as a more successful mechanism for addiction treatment in comparison to traditional treatment models. Bicycle Health’s 2021 impact report also illustrates both economic and clinical ROI. According to the report, Bicycle Health has likely prevented 355 overdoses and reduced OUD symptoms in nearly 10,000 patients, and these numbers are projected to grow 10-20x over in the next 5 years. By 2026, the platform is projected to save 12,500 patients from overdose and reduce OUD symptoms in 342,000 patients. And because Bicycle Health’s model is improving patient outcomes, it’s also reducing costs for the entire healthcare system. Bicycle Health saved the healthcare system nearly $730 million in 2021, and by 2026, the company is projected to save the healthcare system $25.9 billion, allowing the industry to reallocate funds to harm reduction and treatment programs.
