Problem Tech Solves

Tech Brief

US overdose deaths reached record highs last year, spotlighting the need for better addiction treatment. Only one in ten people who struggle with substance use get the treatment they need. For decades the status quo of treatment has been going away to get sober to an inpatient rehab, which is often unaffordable and inconvenient. At Workit, we’ve designed a solution that creates a better way to recover through easily accessible, compassionate telemedicine care. Although buprenorphine is the gold standard of care for opioid use disorder treatment, fewer than 7% of clinicians in the U.S. are licensed to prescribe this life-saving medication. Strict waiver regulations and stigma around using medication for addiction recovery limit access to buprenorphine, with 81% of people who use diverted buprenorphine purchased on the street reporting that they’d rather receive it clinically. Very few programs were offering telemedicine buprenorphine care before Workit Health began offering it — as a controlled substance, it’s traditionally prescribed in person. This disruptive care proved effective and has now paved the way for other programs.

Tech Differentiators

Patient-centered design is the root of Workit Health’s mission. Workit Health is co-founded by two women in recovery, a designer and a social worker, who each brought their own unique perspectives to building a program that balances patient accessibility, ease of use, and clinical quality. This focus on patient-centered design and harm reduction facilitates incredible results. Workit Health is currently the top app for substance use care, with over 1700 reviews with an average rating of 4.6 stars. The Workit Health app has been downloaded over 200,000 times and has over 10,000 active members. Workit Health is now covered by over 200 health plans and is covered by 110 million people in the United States. As whole person care is vital for successful treatment, we've built the most comprehensive virtual program for substance use treatment, which includes support for hepatitis C, co-occurring mental health conditions, and preventative care.

Validation

At Workit, we strive to measure outcomes holistically while incorporating empirically tested measures, including aspects of recovery that are not always tracked in traditional care settings. This data is used to ensure continued safety for medication users, inform the process of care escalation or de-escalation, and improve program quality overall. Our most recent longitudinal study of over 450 safety-net patients in our MAT program demonstrated improved clinical outcomes over traditional care models, including: • 82.29% of Workit members who remain in the program achieve adherence to Workit’s use guidelines after one month in the program. • After one month, 84.51% of Workit members are still engaged in the program (n=381). Multiple studies have shown that retaining clients for three months is associated with improved outcomes. At three months, Workit’s retention is 73.95%, and retention remains high in later stages of recovery, with 67.69% of members still retained in the program at 6 months. • A majority of Workit members show a higher quality of life now compared to when they first entered the program, in an analysis of the past year of assessments (55%). Compared to their first assessment in the program, members report lower anxiety, more participation in enjoyable physical activity, and more conscious spending. In total, members show improvement in five factors measured in the quality of life assessment. Two factors measure members’ own perceptions of their progress in recovery; members show improvement in both of these factors. Members also report increased success in meeting their self-defined recovery goals.
